Klaipėda Port’s mission to adapt to climate change is financed by EU funds
The Port of Klaipėda and its partners are among the first 40 regions in Europe selected to participate in the EU-funded project “Pathways2Resilience co-developing pathways towards climate resilient regions in Europe” (P2R), which aims to strengthen regional resilience and accelerate adaptation to new environmental conditions.
“Climate change is a challenge for which we must prepare strategically and for the long term. Summer storms, which force the Port of Klaipėda to restrict shipping, fluctuations in water levels in the port’s shipping channel, which affect cargo handling processes – these are just a few examples of the problems the Port of Klaipėda is already facing today. Participation in the P2R project is not only an opportunity, but also a necessity to ensure that our port becomes an example of how resilience strategies can help protect both businesses and communities in the region from the impacts of climate change. Klaipėda Port, as an integral and very important part of the Klaipėda region, is taking the lead in the journey towards a more climate-resilient future,” says Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda Port Authority.
Klaipėda Port Authority participates in the P2R project together with its partners: the Association “Klaipėda Region”, Klaipėda Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, The Association of Lithuanian Stevedoring Companies and UAB “MC Baltics”. In response to the common goals of all these organizations, which represent port companies, businesses, scientific organizations, and all municipalities in the Klaipėda region, a climate resilience strategy for the Port of Klaipėda will also be developed an action plan together with an accompanying investment plan. EU funding of €210,000 is available. The duration of the project is 18 months.

The main objective of this project is to help regions and communities in Europe to develop and implement strategies to increase their resilience to climate change. This project is also an important part of the European Union’s climate change adaptation mission. The P2R project is funded under the European Horizon Programme for Research and Innovation project “Missions, Adaptation to Climate Change HORIZON-MISS-2021-CLIMA-02-02 – Support to the regions in developing pathways towards climate resilience and corresponding innovation agendas“, under grant agreement No. 101093942.
In total, around 100 regions in Europe are expected to be selected to participate in the P2R project and start their journey together towards a more climate-resilient future. Funding of €21 million is to be distributed to all of them. The other regions selected to take part in the project will be announced in June 2025.
The project is coordinated by the EIT Climate-KIC with 14 partners from 10 countries, including climate change experts and innovators.
