Rising from the water to connect the city and the port: time capsule laid at Klaipėda’s future cruise ship terminal

May 15 2026

A new space is emerging from the waters of Klaipėda Port – one designed to connect the city, its people and visitors from around the world. As construction of the future Cruise Ship Terminal continues, a time capsule containing a message for future generations was ceremonially placed into the foundations of the new quay, symbolising the beginning of a project that will reshape the city’s waterfront and strengthen its ties to the sea.

“For some time now, Klaipėda has been able to hear the heartbeat of this emerging terminal, as if searching for the rhythm of a new symphony. This is a demanding but rewarding period that is creating new opportunities for the port, Klaipėda, and Lithuania as a whole,“ says Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The new Cruise Ship Terminal is an important project for Klaipėda Port Authority as it seeks to accommodate the growing number of cruise ships wishing to call at Klaipėda. More than 100 cruise ship visits are already scheduled for next year, and these numbers are expected to continue increasing, making it essential to expand the port’s capacity. The new complex will also include the Port Control Centre – the operational heart of Klaipėda Port – from where all port activities will be coordinated, from strategic decisions to day-to-day operations.

The new terminal will also become an integral part of the city’s waterfront. Once completed, it will feature an amphitheatre overlooking the water, pedestrian and cycling paths, recreational areas, and spaces for events. Seamlessly blending into the new public spaces developing in Klaipėda’s city centre, the €50.3 million terminal project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
