European funding for electrification of quays in Klaipėda Port
In recent years, the Klaipėda Port has become increasingly ambitious in its sustainability efforts, and is working to prove that Lithuania’s maritime industrial centre can be environmentally friendly. The European Commission has given the project to develop shore-side electricity supply infrastructure in the port a positive assessment, with EU funding of EUR 8.6 million for the project, which is worth around EUR 11 million. This project marks an important step towards reducing the environmental impact of the port’s activities and enhancing the quality of life of local people.
When speaking about the project, Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda Port Authority, said: “Investing in creating an environmentally friendly port also reflects our commitment to be a modern, innovative, and responsible maritime transport hub. By installing an advanced shore-side power supply infrastructure for ships, the port is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations: improving air quality and reducing noise levels. At the same time, this project strengthens our port’s competitiveness in the international market.”
Today, ships calling at the Klaipėda Port mainly use diesel. This fuel is used not only when the ship is sailing, but also when it is moored in port. Diesel is used to power its generators. According to the conclusions of the scientists who assessed the impact of Klaipėda Port last year, the electricity supply infrastructure at the quayside would make a significant contribution to reducing emissions.
In particular, the Klaipėda Port will install this infrastructure for the DFDS Seaways and TT-Line ferries calling at the Port of Klaipėda. The first four electricity stations for the ro-ro ferries are expected to be operational in 2026. Three stations will be located at Klaipėda Central Terminal and one at Klaipėda Container Terminal. It is planned to provide the same stations for container ships and cruise liners, as well as for the needs of the Klaipėda port fleet. The entire project to electrify the port quays is expected to be completed in 2028.
The Klaipėda Port Authority has already selected a supplier of the equipment after carrying out public procurement procedures. Aktsiaselts BLRT ERA will complete and install the equipment. The project for the construction of the electricity network is currently being prepared and, once the construction permit has been obtained, the contracting works will be procured.
After the implementation of this infrastructure project, the Klaipėda Port plans to buy electricity from suppliers who will generate it from renewable sources – wind and solar.
The electrification of the Klaipėda Port quays has been funded by the European Commission under the Transport Programme of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
