Incident at the port of Klaipeda

Today, 25 September 2006, a man fell overboard the ferry “Kintai” of AB „Smiltynės perkėla“.
 
On 25 September 2006, 13:15, the Vessel Traffic Service (LET) of Klaipeda Port noticed unusual maneuverings of ferry “Kintai” of AB „Smiltynės perkėla“.  When the representatives of LET sent an inquiry message, it appeared that one of the passengers had fallen overboard into the water.  Using the means of the ferry’s crew the passenger’s hoisting failed.  Vytautas Onzuls, a diver of the Latvian firm “Eprons”, who was working in the vicinity tried to help. However, the passenger who fell overboard the ferry “Kintai” and the Latvian who attempted to help the passenger were lifted only after the rescue boat “Žaibas” of the State Enterprise Klaipeda State Seaport Authority had arrived at the scene.    .
The victim identified himself as Arūnas Šimkus. Further investigation of the incident was referred to the Seaport Police Department of Klaipeda Chief Police Commissariat.
