Cargo Handling at the Port of Klaipėda

According to preliminary figures in 2005 the Port handled 21,8 million tons of cargo (which is  +7,5 percent more than in 2004, and +2,7 percent more than in 2003   total amount of cargo handled by the port throughout eleven months of this year is 19,66 million tons, which +6,4 percent more than in 2004 and +1,9 percent more than in 2003 for the corresponding periods (when the record figure of cargo handling standing at 21,2 million tons was attained the latter year).
In November this year Klaipėda port handled 1,95 million tons of cargo, viz., +14,2 percent more compared to the same period last year.
In terms of cargo types, estimates for the port show increase in dry and bulk cargo handling (+16,9 percent up to 6 642,2 thousand tons) and general cargo handling (+10,2 percent, accordingly 6 512,3 thousand tons), whilst the amount of liquid cargo handled, however, did not yet reach the handling figures of the previous year (-5,4 percent down to 6 500,6 thousand tons) (notwithstanding increase in liquid fertilizers handling +22,8 percent to 1 166,4 thousand tons).  Handling of fertilizers in Klaipėda grew up by +24,7 percent.
195 625 TEU containers were handled in January to November.  The figure grew up by +25,2 percent compared to the previous year. 20 091 TEU containers were handled in November this year, this figure being the highest throughout the entire history of container handling at the port of Klaipėda.

The cargo handling growth figures for the period January to November this year at the port of Klaipėda remain the highest among the ports of the Baltic countries.

In January to November 2005 the port of Saint Petersburg handled 53,2 million tons of cargo, i.e., exceeding the last year figure by 13,6 percent. As in previous months, the increase recorded for all cargo nomenclature, except for grain (up to 0,4 million tons), metals (up to 8,4 million tons), correspondingly –41,0 percent, – 6,0 percent. Oil handling at the port constituted 28,5 percent of the total amount of cargo handling; the amount of oil handled was by +27,9 percent higher as compared to the previous year (up to 14,8 million tons).
Increase in oil handling at the port of Primorsk was +30,0 percent, 52,1 million tons of oil was handled in the period January to November.  For the month of November the figure of crude oil handled stood at 840,7 thousand tons, viz., +2,7 percent more compared to October and +12,5 more than within the corresponding period of 2004.
 
In January to November 2005 the port of Tallinn handled 35,9 million tons of cargo, i.e., +4,9 percent increase as compared to the same period of 2004. This increase is the result of growth in dry bulk cargo handling (to 7,0 million tons or +34,3 percent) and liquid cargo handling (to 24,0 million tons, +1,2 percent increase). Notwithstanding increase in ro-ro and containerised cargo handling tonnage, respectively by +6,3 percent (to 2,8 million tons) and +10,1 percent (to 1,0 million tons), however, turnover in other general cargoes decreased by –35,9 percent (from 1,7 million tons in 2004 down to 1,1 million tons in 2005).
 
Cargo handling figures for the port of Ventspils in January to October 2005 amounted to 26,9 million tons, i.e., +5,0 percent increase as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. According to cargo type, increase recorded for dry bulk cargoes (+14,1 percent, respectively 9,7 million tons), and general cargoes (+10,1 percent, 0,9 million tons), the handling figures for liquid cargoes were nearly the same as in the preceding year (16,3 million tons).  Oil handling makes up approx. 56 percent of the total turnover. The figure for oil amount handled over the eleven months was higher by +14,0 percent as compared to the previous year, while the amount of crude oil handled was a mere 244 thousand tons, which is less –1,9 million tons in comparison with the previous year (2,1 million tons). Over the eleven months of this year there was an increase in coal handling (+18,0 percent up to 4,2 million tons), and in fertilizers handling (+9,3 percent up to 4,6 million tons) in relation to the year before. Figures for raw sugar and timber handling decreased in the port.
 
In January to November 2005 the port of Riga handled 22,3 million tons of cargo, i.e., +1,0 percent increase as compared to the previous year.  Handling of liquid cargo (from 4,2 million tons in 2004 down to 3,1 million tons in 2005) and general cargoes (from 6,0 million tons in 2004 down to 5,7 million tons in 2005) decreased, accordingly the drop was –25,6 percent and –4,7 percent; handling of dry bulk cargo amounts increased by 13,2 percent (from 11,9 million tons in 2004 to 13,5 million tons in 2005). Coal accounts for nearly 44 percent of cargo turnover in the port of Riga, its handling grew by 12,7 percent, viz., up to 9,8 million tons.
 
Amount of cargo handled in the port of Liepaja over the eleven months of this year increased by 2,3 percent as compared to the previous year and totalled 4,1 million tons.   The year saw a decrease in liquid cargo handling (–24,7 percent or 0,61 million tons) and general cargo handling (-5,7 percent or 2,1 million tons). Figures for dry bulk cargo handling grew up by +42,1 percent (1,4 million tons) as compared to the corresponding period of 2004 (1,0 million tons). Handling of grain increased twofold (from 0,43 million tons in 2004 to 0,84 million tons in 2005), wile handling of oil products decreased by –25,6 percent (from 0,6 million tons in 2004 down to 0,42 million tons in 2005).
 
Amount of cargo handled in the port of Kaliningrad over the eleven months 2005 totalled nearly 13,4 million tons, including general cargoes +6,3 percent increase (3,2 million tons) and liquid cargoes +10,1 percent increase (8,0 million tons) as compared to the results of the corresponding period of 2004, while handling of dry bulk cargo equalled 1,8 million tons or a decrease by –9,9 compared to the previous year.   The container handling increased by +55,0 percent (from 64 943 TEU in 2004 up to 100 651 TEU in 2005); handling of oil products increased by +11,4 percent (from 7,1 million tons in 2004 to 7,9 million tons in 2005), handling of ferroalloys and metals decreased respectively by -35,6 percent and –11,1 percent.
