Air Pollution Reduction Innovations in the Port

In 2026, shore power supply stations will become operational in Klaipėda Port, allowing up to four ships to connect simultaneously.

To reduce CO₂ emissions in the port, the Klaipėda Port Authority installed onshore power supply (OPS) stations for Ro-Ro ferries. This infrastructure will allow ships arriving in Klaipėda Port to connect to an onshore power source, eliminating the need to burn fuel while docked.

By implementing this project, the port will contribute to climate change mitigation through efficient energy and resource use, specifically by providing sustainable energy to Ro-Ro / Ro-Pax vessels while they are in Klaipėda Port.

This initiative also supports the development of the TEN-T corridor and helps reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Goal – reducing CO₂ emissions

Improving air quality in the city

Ships docked at the shore generate 41% of all emissions in the port. The installation of four planned OPS (Onshore Power Supply) stations would reduce these emissions by 3.54%. In the future, with the complete electrification of quays, emissions could be reduced by as much as 33%.

It also aims to significantly reduce noise and air pollution in the city center and residential areas near the port. The development of onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure contributes to achieving zero-emission operations in the port. Upon arrival at the port and connecting to the shore power system, ships will be able to turn off their auxiliary engines, which are typically used to generate electricity on board (for air conditioning, lighting, etc.) while docked.

  • The European Commission has positively evaluated the project for creating shore-side power supply infrastructure at the port. The project, valued at around 11 million euros, is set to receive 8.6 million euros in EU funding for its implementation. The funding from the European Commission for the electrification project of Klaipėda port’s quays is allocated under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport program.
  • The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, having completed public procurement procedures, has already selected an equipment supplier. The equipment will be assembled and installed by the company “Aktsiaselts BLRT ERA.”
  • Currently, an electrical network construction project is being prepared. Once a construction permit is obtained, contracting works will be procured.
