DigiTechPort2030

To improve knowledge and capacities for decarbonisation measures in small and medium-sized ports of the South Baltic Area by equipping them with two solutions by the end of 2026

The interactive toolbox is offering a set of instruments to apply green technologies jointly harmonised and adapted for SMSPs (final solution, presented on the project platform, digitally accessible):

  • Decision-making tool (digital template with auditing questions to be filled in by SMSPs to get / acquire investments and necessary investments based on up-to-date prices from the market).
  • Green Energy Port Compliance checklist (digital checklist to be filled in to comply with the green / renewable energy port policies in the EU).
  • Green Energy Port Value Calculator (incl. different scenarios to increase business value and green energy port standardisation).

The toolbox will be developed and updated during project implementation. Moreover, it shall be maintained for at least 5 years after the project end including regular updates on new green technologies being appropriate for SMSPs to be added to the toolbox. Regular screening of green trends in business, ports and academia is assured through partnership, in addition, an annual event will be co-organised dedicated to green technology innovations in port sector to gather new concepts and technology inputs in / for the SBA.

The project implements two types of decarbonisations showcase pilots, whereas each port chooses different approaches in pilot design and implementation. Thus, the project will gain multiple insights on the pilot implementation, being highly beneficial for solution development and adaptability. Following two types of pilots will be implemented in the selected SMSPs:

Energy Twin: Energy Twin adds min. one layer in each port to existing digital models to increase environmental & capacity efficiency as well as simulating renewable energy integration (Klaipeda, Ystad & Rostock)
Port Electrification: Transforming operations into electrified

Showcase pilot durability will be ensured through sufficient integration into daily port management and operations. Energy Twins can be adapted with only few inputs to other SMSPs in combination with developed solutions. Hence, the durability is linked to solution strengthening each other. Electrification pilots will be fully integrated into port operations already in piloting phase, thus, they remain durable in the ports even after project end and as long as they are beneficial for SMSPs’ green transition.

EU Regulation and Green Policy Compliance Roadmap of Green Transition for Small and Medium-Sized Ports refers to a strategy and future blueprint for SMSPs. Following components are included into the result:

Competence Excellence

what competences do SMSPs need to develop beyond 2030

Technology Compliance

what infrastructural needs and potentials do SMSPs need to cope with and grasp in the future

Socio-Environmental Consciousness

what social and environmental benefits greening of SMSPs’ operations give to the region and port community

The roadmap will have the format of the report (strategy) with the interactive contents presented on the platform.

The roadmap will be jointly developed and used already during the project implementation including regular internal and external review of tools and methods being integrated. After project end, the roadmap shall be maintained at least 5 years including regular updates and, even more, major upgrades if new green policies applicable for SMSPs in the SBA arise. Through the design of the partnership, relevant future aspects, policies and key enabling technologies from port sector, business and academia will be included into updates / upgrades.
