Transfer of the Port Authority rescue ship SAKIAI

On the 4th of February 2009 at the meeting of the Government of Lithuania there was discussed the question on transfer of rescue ship SAKIAI that SE Klaipėda State Seaport Authority managed it by in-trust as long-term asset – to manage, use and dispose by in-trust to Naval Forces of Lithuania.
Since 1991 SE Klaipeda State Seaport Authority fulfilled the search and rescue functions of Lithuania in the sea, Curonian Lagoon and port waters. In order to effectively and suitable do it, port authority purchased special ships.
When amendments to the laws were made and they came into force since the first of January 2009, it was decided that state search and rescue function is going to be fulfilled by
Naval Forces at sea;
State Border Guard Coast guard district – in the Curonian Lagoon;
Port Authority – in port waters. For this purpose port authority has got rescue cuter ŽAIBAS.
We will inform additionally about coming into force the decision of the Government of Lithuania and official transfer of rescue ship ŠAKIAI.
