It is planned to continue the implementation of large scope projects on modernisation of road and railway infrastructure, to improve the infrastructure of international airports and Klaipėda State Seaport, to continue the reconstruction of streets and roads of national significance and the development of public eco- transport at municipalities using the assistance of EU funds.
According to the Minister of Communications Eligijus Masiulis the major part of EU assistance funds – 416,4 million Lt. – will be allocated to development of the roads of national significance. The construction of Vilnius outer Southern bypass will start, reconstruction of Grigiškės transport hub will be continued and at Jakai roundabout that is at the vicinity of Klaipėda town two overhead roads in directions Kaunas – Palanga and Palanga Kaunas will be constructed. It is planned to pursue reconstruction of European highways Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda, Vilnius–Lyda, Vilnius–Panevėžys–Šiauliai–Palanga, Vilnius- Prienai–Marijampolė. The construction works of Kairiai and Priekulė bypass roads will start.
176,3 million of EU assistance funds are to be allocated to railway infrastructure projects. It is anticipated to update the railway lines Klaipėda–Pagėgiai, Mažeikiai–state border, to expand the hub of Klaipėda railway, to lay secondary tracks in Vilnius bypass zones Pušynas – Paneriai and Kyviškės – Valčiūnai and in Kūlupėnai – Kretinga zones. Furthermore, due to allocated TENT-T funds the implementation of the project „ Rail Baltica“ will be pursued.
It is planned to invest 60,7 million litas of EU assistance funds to Klaipėda Port. The construction works of access roads and railways that had started the last year will be continued and six new projects – the construction of infrastructure of passenger and cargo terminal, the dredging and widening of entrance channel, the reconstruction of access roads to cargo terminals, the construction of the Quay for Small and Pleasure Boats financed and capital dredging of Port water territory – are to be launched.
Platforms and plane runways in international airports in Vilnius and Palanga will be reconstructed in line with other works, totally nearly 32 million litas will be used.
It is planned to allocate 80,4 million litas to municipality transport projects. All national municipalities will be able to continue previously planned reconstruction works of streets and roads of national significance. It is anticipated that municipalities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys will perform public procurement procedures by the end of the year and sign contracts on implementation of eco-transport development projects. Besides, Vilnius municipality should start the II stage of Western bypass road – the construction of this road will be performed using the EU assistance of 13,4 million litas.
In 2010 nearly 863,7 million litas of EU structural assistance funds were allocated to EU assistance projects coordinated by the Ministry of Communication of the Republic of Lithuania.
