„We have to admit that Klaipėda port suffers a decline in cruise shipping influenced by the following factors: interest in Klaipėda, as in new object of marine tourism, is  fading away and the development of tourism services is simply insufficient – the range of places of interest, variety of entertainment and leisure options and tours is quite poor. Neighbouring ports of similar size, that are not capitals, also observe a decline in cruise shipping, e.g.:, ports of Gdansk, and Gdynia (Poland) record cruise shipping downfall by 8 % “,– said the head of Marketing Department Kristina Gontier.

This year, just like every year, delegations of Klaipėda port participated in cruise-related events promoting Klaipėda as a cruise port – various exhibitions and conferences, took part in activities of international associations. In recent years the funds assigned by the Port Authority for measures of cruise shipping marketing amounted to: 83 500 LTL – in 2011, 92 000 LTL – in 2010, 118 500 LTL – in 2009, correspondingly.

In order to ensure diverse development of cruise shipping market, the Port Authority has been reducing port dues for cruise ships for three years in a row (besides, large discounts on multiple arrivals were introduced). In 2011 the company paid the major part of expenses related with cruise exhibitions: the Port Authority’s costs for the exhibition in Miami amounted to approx. 10 thousand LTL (received subsidy of 64 thousand LTL), for the exhibition in Hamburg –  20 thousand LTL (total estimate of the exhibition – approx. 28 000 LTL). This year the activity of Cruise Baltic association was financed by 50 %, i.e. 21 580 LTL in total. It should be noticed, that in 2003 constructed “non-profit” object – Klaipėda Cruise Ship Terminal – cost 28,3 million litas (i.e. the total value of quays № 27–40 and № 42). Also, the new Passenger and Cargo Terminal is under construction at the moment, where the Port Authority will be able to ensure adequate and high-quality accommodation and service for cruise ships; 112,5 million LTL was assigned by the Port Authority for the construction of this terminal.

„Port Authority has no influence on the development of the city’s tourism objects that would stimulate tourism in this region. Only efforts of the Port Authority alone are not enough, other companies and institutions involved in this business sector should also make their  contributions. It’s a pity that we still receive many complains regarding untidy, unattractive territories of the cruise terminal and the castle site. Long-drawn reconstruction of the representative place of the city – the Theatre square and the building – also reduces attractiveness of the city. Since the very beginning of cruise shipping the range of available excursions hasn’t been sufficiently developed. Especially, considering the fact that passengers of cruise ships come to see Klaipėda city and the region, not the port itself“,– said Marketing and Administration director Artūras Drungilas.
