The excellent example of efficient payback on State investments in Klaipeda Port

Nov 14 2013

On the 29th of June, 2013 vessel „Marina“ left the Seaport of Klaipėda with 68,3 tons of iron ore onboard.

The 224.95 metres in length vessel was loaded at the quays No. 8 and No. 9 operated by SC Klaipėda Stevedoring Company (KLASCO). The accommodation of this vessel in Klaipeda Seaport is the excellent example of efficient return on State investments in Klaipeda Port.

The maximum draught of this vessel is 13.84 metres. Considering present hydrological, meteorological and navigational conditions vessel “Marina” was loaded up to the draught of 13.35 metres.

In order to load the vessel by such draught the capital dredging works were performed nearby the reconstructed quays No. 8 and No. 9. These works were accomplished on the 21st of June 2013.

Reconstruction of quays No. 8 and No. 9 was performed by the contractor of the Seaport Authority the company „Josef Mobius Bau-Aktiengesellschaft“. The contractual price was 24 037 622.83 Lt (including VAT). The total length of reconstructed quays No. 8 and No. 9 is 255 metres (90 metres and 165 metres respectively).

“This example demonstrates vividly, that putting into operation such a significant object in time guarantees efficient Port activity, enhances competitiveness, ensures the growth of cargo flows. This case demonstrates the excellent example of cooperation between Port Authority and stevedoring company that is possible even without bilateral contract agreements on mutual commitments. Definitely, a very significant factor is that State investments payback and namely in this case the payback started very promptly” – told Director General Arvydas Vaitkus.

„I appreciate that Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Lithuanian Railways did their best to allow us to keep the promise given to our clients on the cargo loading to „Postpanamax “type vessels up to gross tonnage at the new quay and the lay time of a vessel. On behalf of the staff of the company I would like to express the sincere gratitude to Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Lithuanian Railways. Possibility to load/unload the large amount of cargoes to ships create conditions to our company to increase the cargo turnover and receive more income. Besides, we provide more activity to all transport chain and our country“ – told Audrius Pauža, Director General of Klaipėda Stevedoring Company KLASCO. – „I hope that in the nearest future we will be able to load/unload „Postpanamax“ ships with draught up to 13,9 metres.
