In January – the record cargo handling result throughout the history of Klaipėda Port
3,177 million tons of marine cargo (more by 22,9 percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2010) was handled in January of 2011 in Klaipėda Port. The growth of cargo turnover that had started since the second half of 2009 keeps remaining at the constant level and even exceeds all expectations. The key reasons that had determined the extremely high rate of cargo handling in January are as follow:
1. Accumulated amount of bulk cargo that due to unfavourable weather conditions was not handled in December of 2010.
2. The increased amount of Russian cargo that has grown due to restrictions to carry the cargo by the roadways of Poland.
3. Increasing consumption of goods.
4. Attraction of new cargoes to Klaipėda Port.

According to cargo groups:
– general cargo increased by +38,3 pct., totally 920,6 thousand tons were handled.
– dry and bulk cargo increased by +22,0 pct., totally 1255,3 thousand tons were handled .
– liquefied cargo increased by +12,5 pct., totally 1000,9 thousand tons were handled.
According to the types of handled cargo the highest growing rates were recorded in containerised and Ro – Ro cargo sector. Ro – Ro cargo handling volumes successfully maintain growing tendencies calculating both in tons and units. 405,1 thousand tons, i.e. more by 40,5 percent, or 116,9 thousand tons were handled in January of 2011. Calculating in units 20 580 units, i.e. more by 40,7 percent or by 5 948 units were handled comparing with January of the previous year.
In January of this year containerised cargo handling volumes (calculating in TEU) were 27 686 TEU, i.e. more by 39,8 percent if to compare with the corresponding period of 2010. In terms of tonnage the turnover of containerised cargo increased as well. Calculating in tons the growth was 23,5 percent, totally 317,1 thousand tons were handled.
During January of this year 19 783 thousand passengers, i.e. more by 32,8 percent, or by 4 891 passenger than during the corresponding period of 2010, visited Klaipėda Port.
555 ships, i.e. more by 14,0 percent or by 68 ships comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year called Klaipėda port in January of 2011.
