In January through August 2006 Klaipeda Port handled 15,55 million tones of cargo, which is higher by +11,5 percent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2005.
Total increase was the result of the turnover in June, July and August (handling figure for June was 2.16 million tones, July – 1.88 million tones).  For comparison – turnover in June 2005 was merely 1.45 million tones, in July 2005 – 1.60 million tones and in August 1.71 million tones.
The highest growth rates recorded in eight months of this year are in handling of oil products (+29.6 percent) and bulk fertilizers (+28.2 percent) in relation to the same period of 2005.

Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in the first eight months of 2005 amount of oil handled stood at 3.80 million tons while in January-August 2006 – 4.92 million tons) and turnover of molasses handling which grew 3.7 times.

Higher growth rates of total turnover have been checked by the decreased oil product export from the company “Mažeikių nafta”.  This was determined by the problems of oil supply from Russia.  Following accident on the oil pipeline “Družba” in the territory of Russia, delivery of oil by pipeline to Mažeikiai was stopped.  Oil was delivered in tankers via Būtingė Oil Terminal.  As a result, the oil processing plant in Mažeikiai operated at a partial capacity for 10 days.  During this period priority was given to supply oil products to the domestic market.
Increased cargo flows of bulk fertilizers, agricultural products and peat had a major impact on growth of bulk and dry cargo handling. In January-August this year Klaipeda port handled 2.28 million tons (figure for 2005 was 1.782 million tons) of bulk fertilizers, an increase of +29.6 percent, and 0.56 million tons (figure for 2005 was 0.49 million tons) of agricultural products, an increase of + 14.0 percent. Monthly turnover of bulk fertilizers (424 thousand tons) was the highest in 2006.
Increase of Ro-ro units (change + 23.8 percent) was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters, trucks and passenger cars in the port of Klaipeda.  Over 20.7 thousand ro-ro units were handled in August this year, which is the highest monthly figure for 2006.
The container handling (TEU), which increased in July and August, made it possible to surpass the total handling amount for the eight months in relation to the last year.
Būtingė Oil Terminal handled 3.83 million tons of crude oil in January – August 2006 (change +9.8 percent in relation to the last year).  It is necessary to note that 8 ships arrivals in the terminal during this months brought imported crude oil (raw product for the company “Mažeikių nafta”).
