In January through May 2006 Klaipeda Port handled 9,56 million tones of cargo, which is higher by +1,3 percent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2005. The trend of increasing of general changes is evident in relation to the same periods last year (January – April 2006 change +1,5 percent; January – May change + 4,0 percent).
The highest growth rates recorded in five months of this year are in handling of agricultural products (+33,5 percent) and bulk fertilizers (+24,3 percent) in relation to the same period last year.
Cargo Handling at the Port of Klaipeda in May 2006

Significant growth rates of cargo handling in March, April and May this year (amount of cargo handled in March 1,99 million tons, April. – 1,98 million tons, May – 1,90 million tons) made it possible to exceed handling figures for the same period last year.
In terms of cargo types, there was a growth of all cargo types including liquid, dry and bulk and general cargoes in the port of Klaipeda in January-May this year.
Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in five months of 2005 amount of oil handled stood at 2,81 million tons while in January-May 2006 – 3,02 million tons) and several fold growth of molasses handling.
In January-May 2006, remaining part of liquid cargoes included handling of 482 thousand tons of liquid fertilizers and vegetable fats and oils whose amounts handled changed insignificantly compared to the same period of 2005.
Increased cargo flows of bulk fertilizers and agricultural products had a major impact on growth of bulk and dry cargo handling. In January-May this year Klaipeda port handled 1,37 million tons (figure for 2005 – 1,11 million tons) of bulk fertilizers, an increase of +24,3 percent, and 0,51 million tons (figure for 2005 – 0,38 million tons) of agricultural products, an increase of + 33,5 percent. The latter growth is the result of increasing handling of grain by the port, reaching amount of 400 thousand tons.
Increase of Ro-ro units (change + 21,3 percent) was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters, trucks and passenger cars in the port of Klaipeda. Over 16,8 thousand ro-ro units were handled in this May, which is the highest monthly figure for 2006.
Handling of Ro-ro units (gross) and iron and steel wares was the highest throughout the five months of this year. Handling of the ro-ro units reached almost 320 thousand tons (+ 23,6 percent), and the latter – 45,5 thousand tons (+ 73,0 percent). The growth of these cargoes directly influenced the increased handling flow of general cargoes.
The container handling (TEU) made it possible to surpass the total handling amount for the five months in relation to the last year.
Increased scrap metal quantities in 2006 (especially in March and May) made it possible to approximate the last year figure for this cargo type handling.
Būtingė Terminal in May 2006 handled over 620 thousand tons of oil products. Better handling results of the last May (nearly 700 thousand tons) did not allow achieving the growth of total five-month handling figure in 2006.
