Cargo Handling at the Port of Klaipeda and Neighbouring Ports in January – June 2006

January through June 2006 Klaipeda Port handled 11,76 million tones of cargo (+10,5 percent more in comparison to the same period of 2005). 
In terms of cargo types, there was a growth of all cargo types in the period January through June this year. Liquid cargoes handled amounted to 4 590,0 thousand tons (growth +20,9 percent in relation to 2005), bulk and dry cargoes 3 563,3 thousand tons (growth +5,8 percent in relation to 2005), general cargoes 3 604,3 thousand tons (growth +3,8 percent in relation to 2005).

Comparing the cargo handling figures for the first half year of 2006 with the same period of the previous year the amount of molasses handled grew 4,4 times, peat 1,5 times, agricultural products by +33,2 percent, also growth of +28,7 percent was fixed for bulk fertilisers, and +27,7 percent for Ro-ro cargo handling (in terms of tonnage).   Decrease in Klaipeda port was recorded in handling of fertilizers in big bags -35,7 percent, sugar -25,9 percent, timber – 25,2 percent, iron and steel wares -14,2 percent.
In January-June 2006 amount of road vehicles handled was 89 753 units (change +21,5 percent) and TEU containers handled 106 203 units (change +1,9 percent).

Increase of Ro-ro units was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters, trucks and passenger cars in the port of Klaipeda.  Over 17,9 thousand ro-ro units were handled in this June, which is the highest monthly figure for 2006. 
3 851 ships called at Klaipeda Port in January-June (-4,8 percent less than in January-June 2005), number of passengers serviced was 93 258 (change of +3,5 percent).  The trend to service larger tonnage vessels has been noted in the port of Klaipeda.
The fastest cargo turnover increase (percentagewise) in comparison to other ports of the Baltic States was recorded for the first half year of 2006.

At the port of Saint Petersburg the amount of cargo handled in the six months of this year was 24,8 million tons. The highest growth (+ 21,1 percent or 1 233,7 thousand tons) was recorded for container handling; handling of metals and refrigerated goods grew slightly in relation to the previous year (correspondingly +8,7 percent and + 4,9 percent).  Total flow of containerized cargo, metals and oil products accounted for 70,5 percent of the turnover of the port of Saint Petersburg.
In January-May 2006, handling of chemical goods – 1 154,0 thousand tons, coal – 833,7 thousand tons t, timber – 355,5 thousand tons and oil products – 793,8 thousand tons, went down, which caused a drop of the total handling figures.
 
Throughout the first six months of this year the port of Tallinn handled 20,72 million tons of cargo (+4,4 percent change in comparison to the same period of 2005). In terms of cargo type, dry bulk cargo handling grew by +41,5 percent or 1 655,1 thousand tons, general cargo +11,0 percent or 225,4 thousand tons, while amount of liquid cargo handled decreased by –7,4 percent or 1 021,6 thousand tons.  Liquid cargoes 61,4 percent accounted for the largest share in the total handling structure in Tallinn port.
In terms of cargo nomenclature, amount of handling of coal grew by more than twofold (3,4 million tons handled); grain and food handling also showed increase.  Figures of turnover of oil and oil products, fertilizers and timber decreased.   
 
Cargo handling figure for the port of Ventspils in January through June 2006 was 14,57 million tons, the figure for the corresponding period of 2005 was 14,98 million tons.  In terms of cargo type, amount of dry bulk cargo handled was –21,2 percent, correspondingly 4,13 million tons, general cargo increased 3,3 times to 1,25 million tons and liquid cargo by –1,8 percent to 9,19 million tons.  In terms of cargo nomenclature, handling of Ro-ro (+ 810 thousand tons), ammonia (+ 233 thousand tons) and crude oil (+229 thousand tons) have grown; decrease was recorded for handling of fertilisers (-1245 thousand tons), and oil products (-629 thousand tons).
 
In the first half year of 2006 the port of Riga handled 12,85 million tons of cargo, which is +6,4 percent more in relation to the same period of the previous year.  Handling of dry bulk cargo accounted for the larger share of the total amounting to more than 8,05 million tons, this amount exceeded the same period last year amount by +16,6 percent or 1 145,7 thousand tons. Amount of chemicals (mineral fertilizers) handled was -93 thousand tons or –11,4 percent less than the previous year.  Coal handling increased by +15,4 percent or 772,9 thousand tons and accounted for 72 percent of total handling turnover.
Amount of general cargo handled in the port of Riga was 2,49 million tons (-22,6 percent down in comparison to January-June of the previous year).  In terms of general cargo nomenclature, timber accounted for 1 506,8 thousand tons (-26,6 percent), and containerised cargo 783,9 thousand tons (+5,3 percent). Turnover of liquid cargo for January-June increased by +17,7 percent in comparison to the previous year and amounted to 2,31 million tons including 1,87 million tons of oil products (+21,7 percent).
During the six months 79 942 passengers (change –1,8 percent) visited port of Riga, including 14 740 passengers of cruise ships.
 
Amount of cargo handled in the port of Kaliningrad throughout the first six months of this year was equal to 7,84 million tons (+1,6 percent up in relation to the same period of 2005). Increase was recorded for handling of liquid cargo bulk of which is made up of oil products, the figure was +688,6 thousand tons or +14,9 percent.  Handling of dry bulk cargo totalled –201,5 thousand tons or –19,2 percent less.  Slump in handling of general cargo (figure for January-June 2006 was 1 568,1 thousand tons, while in January-June 2005 – 1 866,1 thousand tons) was caused by lower amounts of metals and timber handled.  Slump in general cargo and bulk cargo handling accounted for the largest decrease in total handling figures in Kaliningrad port.
 
Amount of cargo handled in the port of Liepaja in January-June 2006 was 2,07 million tons, which is less by –10,4 percent than in January-June of 2005. Handling of liquid cargo amounted to 528,4 thousand tons or +37,3 percent more than in the first half year of 2005, bulk cargo – 798,9 thousand tons (growth of +26,4 percent in relation to the corresponding period of the previous year).  Growth of these types of cargo is the result of increased handling of agricultural goods, scrap metals and oil products.
Figure for general cargoes was down from 1 293,4 thousand tons in 2005 to 742,1 thousand tons in 2006 (change –42,6 percent), which caused slump in overall handling figures for the port of Liepaja.  In terms of cargo nomenclature, decrease was recorded for Ro-ro handling (-302,6 thousand tons), timber (-113,9 thousand tons) and ferrous metals (–87,2 thousand tons).The negative change was conditioned by decreased amounts of ferroalloys, timber and fertilizers.
