AN APPLICATION REGARDING PREPARATION OF TECHNICAL PROJECTS FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF THE CENTRAL ACCESS ROAD TO KLAIPĖDA PORT AND PASSENGER CARGO TERMINAL INFRASTRUCTURE

On the 25th of April, 2006 State Enterprise Klaipėda State Seaport Authority submitted an application to the European Commission to receive funding from the European Community under the support programme for the development of TransEuropean Transport Networks (TEN-T).

 

The European Community is asked for support for the implementation of two projects, i.e preparation of technical projects for reconstruction of the central access road to the port – Baltijos avenue  and for construction of Passenger and Cargo Terminal infrastructure objects. The European Community and Seaport Authority would provide 3.2 mln. EUR in equal parts for preparation of the projects.

 

Baltijos avenue in Klaipėda is an extension of Klaipėda – Vilnius highway (part of TransEuropean Network – IXB corridor). Presently, the avenue ends at the crossroad with Minijos Street, which is located at the central part of the port, however the crossroad does not have a branch to the port. As Baltijos avenue crosses all main streets of the city, even now there are traffic jams in the traffic circles at rush hour. The project provides for preparation of technical projects for the reconstruction of crossroads of Baltijos avenue with other streets of the city and for extension of the avenue to port berths, where new Passenger Cargo Terminal is to be built in 2009. 

 

The budget of TEN-T for 2006 amounts to 100 mln. Euro, 70 percent of which the European Commission plans to allot to the new members of the European Union, therefore the funding for the works estimated in the application is expected to be received.

 

After the funding is confirmed, the technical projects will be prepared during 2006 – 2007 years and the works of Baltic avenue reconstruction and construction of Passenger Cargo Terminal infrastructure are planned to be finished in 2009. Funds necessary for the financing of these works are included into the programme of European Union Structural Funding actions for 2007 – 2013.
