Activity of Klaipeda port and neighbouring ports in February 2004

During January – February, 2005 3.67 million tons of cargo were handled, i.e. by 7 % less than in the same period of 2004.

 

2.57 million tons of cargo (excluding oil products) were handled during January – February, 2005, i.e. by 9 % more than last year.

 

During January – February, 2005 handling of grain broke the record and made 113 thousand tons that in comparison with the last year increased tens of times.

Handling of iron and steel increased more than twice, 92.6 thousand tons during January – February, 2005 and 34.1 thousand tons respectively in 2004; handling of liquid fertilizers considerably increased and made 226.5 thousand tons in January – February, 2005 and 100.2 thousand tons in 2004 respectively;  handling of frozen cargo increased (+ 97 %), packed fertilizers (+ 25 %), cement (+ 21 %), scrap-iron (+ 14 %).

 

During January – February (2005) 32 728 TEU containers were handled in Klaipeda port, i.e. by 45 % more than in the same period last year. Klaipeda port still remains a leader in container handling among the Baltic ports.

 

Services were provided to 16 552 passengers during January – February, 2005, i.e. by 3 % less than in the same period in 2004.

 

During the mentioned period cargo handling in Butinge SPM made 0.61 million tons, i.e. by 65 % less than in the same period in 2004.

Neighbouring ports

 

3.66 million tons of cargo were handled in St. Petersburg during January – February, 2005, i.e. by 29 % more than last year.

 

4.52 million tons of cargo were handled in Primorsk, i.e. by 56 % more than in 2004 respectively.

 

The port of Tallinn handled 6.26 million tons of cargo in January – February, 2005, i.e. by 2.5 % less than in the same period in 2004.

During January – February, 2005 container handling increased by 7.4 % in comparison with the previous year. Handling of liquid cargo increased a little, however handling of loose bulk cargo and dry cargo decreased respectively by – 3.2 % and – 6.9 %.

 

3.7 million tons of cargo were handled in Riga port, i.e. by 7.7 % more than in January – February, 2004.

During January – February 2005, in comparison with the same period last year, handling of dry bulk and liquid cargo, respectively by 12.3 % and 18.9 %, however handling of general cargo decreased by 6.4 %. Handling of coal increased by 1.4 %.

 

 During January – February increase in the following handling may be observed – oil products (16.4 %), building materials (100 %), metals (61.5 %), liquid fertilizers (90.4 %), and road transport vehicles (15.2 %). Decrease in handling of sugar (100 %), frozen products (83.3 %), machine equipment (100 %), and timber (10.8 %).
