A new record at distance of 3 sea miles for women was set in the IX Traditional International Running Competition „Amber Sea Mile 2009“

Oct 12 2009

On 10th October, 2009 an international running competition “Amber Sea Mile 2009” was held in a unique corner of nature – Smiltynė.

The „Amber Sea Mile“, organized for the ninth time, already has its regular participants, volunteer organizers, records and record-holders.

This year the international running competition gathered almost 570 runners from various cities of Lithuania, Russia and Latvia.  Latvian sportsman Valerijs Žolnerovičs showed the best result among men at the distance of 6 sea miles, and the best runner at the distance of 3 sea miles for women was Rasa Drazdauskaitė – a representative of Šiauliai club „Šviesos kariai“ – who broke this distance record of the year 2007, previously held by runner from Riga Daniela Fetcere.
Lithuanian long distance and marathon runner Živilė Balčiūnaitė also took part in the competition; she finished 3rd in the distance of 3 sea miles.

Names and surnames of the winners at 6 and 3 sea miles distances are traditionally carved on the memorial stone, located at the Sports and health base in Smiltynė; the stone, which weights 6 tons, was lifted from the bottom of the Curonian lagoon in the course of dredging works in the port waters. All participants that finish the set distance were awarded with certificates; also a considerable number of runners were awarded with “Amber Sea Mile” special souvenirs.
