On 21 October 2010, the Port Authority and KlaipedaCityMunicipality signed an agreement for partial compensation of the costs associated with the arrangement of the Tall Ships Races. The Port Authority will allot up to 100 000.00 Litas for organization of the races under this agreement.
“The Tall Ships Races” (the new name – “The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta”), which officially started in 1956, has made a large influence on two worldwide trends: founding national sail training associations across the world and emergence of numerous races, festivals and feasts in connection with sail craft. After lapse of several years, the races gained such popularity as to organize them across the whole world. “The Tall Ships Races” fleet has grown from 22 vessels in 1956 to more than 100 participants in the latter years.
The mentioned races will be held in August and September of 2011, and KlaipedaPort will receive the tall ships in 18-21 August.
The races are a special event for Lithuania as in 2009 so many tall ships under foreign flags, as many as 99, visited the port of Klaipeda for the first time in the county’s history.
”We are glad that the port of Klaipeda will feature sails again next year and we, the Port Authority, will contribute to this event. We also hope that this top level event, which attracted numerous people and much interest, will embed the concept of Lithuania as a maritime state in the minds of our people”, said Eugenijus Gentvilas, Director General of the Port Authority.
