Air Pollution Reduction Innovations in the Port

In 2026, shore power supply stations will become operational in Klaipėda Port, allowing up to four ships to connect simultaneously.

To reduce CO₂ emissions at the port, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority has installed onshore power supply (OPS) facilities for Ro-Ro ferries at Baltijos Ave. 40A (quays No. 80, 80A and 81A) and Minijos St. 180 (quay No. 128).

The OPS facilities will enable vessels calling at the Port of Klaipėda to connect to shore-side electricity and obtain the energy they need without having to burn additional fuel while berthed.

By implementing this project, the port will contribute to climate change mitigation through efficient energy and resource use, specifically by providing sustainable energy to Ro-Ro / Ro-Pax vessels while they are in Klaipėda Port.

This initiative also supports the development of the TEN-T corridor and helps reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Goal – reducing CO₂ emissions

Improving air quality in the city

Ships docked at the shore generate 41% of all emissions in the port. The installation of four OPS facilities will reduce these emissions by 3.54%. In the future, with the complete electrification of quays, emissions could be reduced by as much as 33%.

It also aims to significantly reduce noise and air pollution in the city center and residential areas near the port. The development of onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure contributes to achieving zero-emission operations in the port. Upon arrival at the port and connecting to the shore power system, ships will be able to turn off their auxiliary engines, which are typically used to generate electricity on board (for air conditioning, lighting, etc.) while docked.
