Review of Cargo Handling in Klaipėda and other Eastern Coast Baltic Sea Ports

In ten month of this year KlaipėdaPort handled 25,3 million tons of marine cargo, the total cargo handling increase made 12,7 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to cargo handling turnover KlaipėdaPort still remains ahead of neighbouring Riga and VentspilsPorts and gets behind only to Joined Tallinn Port.
The highest increase in cargo turnover during ten month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2009 was reached due to increased handling volumes of natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 635,2 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+947,3 thousand tons), containerized cargo (+653,3 thousand tons), minerals and construction materials.
( +453,4 thousand tons).
In terms of cargo groups the handling of general cargo were handling volumes reached up to 8 016,4 thousand tons (31,6 percent of general port handling) increased mostly (29,1 percent). Dry and bulk cargo handling increased by 25,7 percent, volumes of this cargogroup were9 622,3thousand tons (38 percent). The handling of liquefied cargo decreased by 10,7 percent, in total 7 722,4 thousand tons (30,4 percent) were handled.
In January – October of this year 5 597 ships. i.e. less by 8,9 percent or by 545 ships, comparing to the corresponding period of the previous year,called KlaipėdaPort.The number of passengerswas 285,7 thousand, i.e. more by 17,6 percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2009.
Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling. 241284 TEU, i.e. more by 19,0 percent comparing to the corresponding period of 2009 ( increase made38515 TEU).
