REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC SEA PORTS
January – May of 2011
Throughout five month of this year Klaipėda Port handled 15,3 million tons of sea born cargo, the overall cargo handling increase reached even 21,6 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in January – May of 2011 Klaipeda Port has still remained ahead the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils but slightly left behind the Joint Port of Tallinn. The common cargo handling results of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal made 18,7 million tons in January – May of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn by 2,6 million litas.
The highest increase in cargo turnover during five month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 272,0 thousand tons), containerized cargo (+437,7 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+365,2 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+352,3 thousand tons) bulk iron ore (+220,3 thousand tons) and oil products (+181,8 thousand tons),
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo were the handling turnover was 5 878,2 thousand tons (38,5 percent of overall port handling) increased mostly (by 27,0 percent).Handling turnover of general cargo increased by 24,0 percent, in total 4 812,1thousand tons (31,6 percent) were handled. Liquefied cargo handling increased by 13,1percent, handlingvolumes of this cargogroup were4 566,4thousand tons (29,9 percent).
2 747 vessels, i.e. more by 8,4 percent or by 214 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous yearcalled Klaipėda Port in January–May of this yearThe number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 108,2 thousand, i.e. more by 10,9percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2010. The number of cruise passengers in January – May of 2011 was only 3,7 thousand, i.e. less by – 46,3 percent or by -3,2 thousand passengers.
Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 176 049 TEU, i.e. more by 53,4 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 (the increase made61 248 TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – May of 2011.
