REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC
SEA PORTS
January – March of 2012
The aggregated throughput of sea – born cargo in Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – March of 2012 totalled 10,36 million tons, the overall year – on – year change was -6,5 percent down. 8,26 million tons were handled in Klaipeda Seaport throughout the analysed period, meanwhile Būtingės terminal handled 2,10 million tons.
The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout January – March of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 was reached due to increased handling volumes of iron ore (+146,8 thou. tons yoy), raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+129,3 thou. tons yoy), containerized cargoes (+60,5 thou. tons yoy), natural and chemical fertilizers (packed) (+36,1 thou. tons yoy) and peat (+34,7 thou. tons yoy).
The biggest drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – March of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemicalfertilizers (-798,5 thou. tons yoy) and raw sugar (-159,1 thou. tons yoy).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargoincreased by +2,4 pct. to 2 769,8 thou. tons (33,5 pct. of overall Port handling turnover). General cargo handlingvolumes decreased by -3,8pct. yoy, the overall turnover in this cargo group was 2 681,2thou. tons (32,5pct. of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 21,7 yoy pct., the handling rates of this cargo category were 2 805,3 thou. tons (34,0 pct. of overall Port handling turnover).
1 611vessels, including 1 190 international vessels (-20 vessels or -1,7 pct year-on-year) and 421 local ships ( +7 ships or + 1,7 pct. yoy) were reported to call Klaipėda Port throughout the period of January – March of 2012.
Throughout the foregoing period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port was less by 13 vessels or by 0,8 pct. than throughout the corresponding period of 2011.
The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 57 233, i.e. more by 4,2pct. or by 2 295 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.
