REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC SEA PORTS
January – May of 2012
The aggregated throughput of sea – born cargo in Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – May of 2012 totalled 16,8 million tn, the overall year – on – year change was 10,0 percent down. 14,0 million tn were handled in Klaipeda Seaport throughout the analysed period, the year-on-year change was -8,4 pct. or -1,3 million tn, meanwhile Būtingės terminal handled 2,8 million tn, the year-on-year change was -17,4 pct. or -0,6 million tn.
The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout January – May of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 was reached due to increased handling volumes of iron ore (+168,7 thou. tn yoy) and raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+162,1 thou. tn yoy).
The most considerable drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – May of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemicalfertilizers (-900,4 thou. tn yoy) and oil products (-322,2 thou. tn yoy).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargodecreased by 11,3 pct. to 7 061,1 thou. tn (42,1 pct. of overall Port handling turnover). General cargo handlingvolumes decreased by 6,5pct. yoy, the overall turnover in this cargo group was 4 488,4thou. tn (26,7pct. of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 11,2 pct., the handling rates of this cargo category were 5 243,6 thou. tn (31,2 pct. of overall Port handling turnover).
2 835 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal within the period ofJanuary – May of 2012. 28 vessels (-21,4 pct. or less by 6 vessels yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. 2 004 international vessels (+9 vessels or +0,5 pct year-on-year) and 803 domestic ships ( +49 ships or +6,5 pct. yoy) were reported to call Klaipėda Port. Throughout the foregoing period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port was more by 58 vessels or by 2,1 pct. than throughout the corresponding period of 2011. The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 117 240, i.e. more by 8,4 pct. or by 9 077 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.
