REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC SEA PORTS
January – February of 2012
With the sea born totalling 5,28 million tons Klaipėda Port’s the overall cargo handling turnover throughout January – February of this year was -13,9 percent down comparing with the corresponding period of 2011
The aggregated throughput of Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – February of 2012 totalled 6,68 million tons (-12,4 percent or -946,5 thousand tons ) and exceeded the throughput of Joint Port of Tallinn by 1 019,1 thousand tons.
The biggest growth in cargo turnover throughout January – February of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 was reached due to increased handling volumes of iron ore (+94,3 thousand tons year-on-year), containerized cargoes(+86,7 thousand tons year-on-year) and raw and processed minerals and construction materials ( +41,6 thousand tons year – on year).
The biggest drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – February of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (-644,6 thousand tons year-over year), oil products (-194,3 thousand tons year-over-year) and raw sugar (-154,5 thousand tons year-over-year).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargo dropped down by -7,6 percent to 1 811,1 thousand tons (34,4 percent of overall Port handling turnover), general cargo handlingvolumes decreased by -1,6 percent, the overall turnover of this cargo group was 1 710,7 thousand tons ( 32,4 percent of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 27,7 percent, the handling rates of this cargo category were 1 753,3 thousand tons (33,2 percent of overall Port handling turnover).
1 016vessels, including 762 international vessels (-17 vessels or -2,2 percent Year-over-year) and 254 local ships (-6 ships or -2,4 percent yoy) called Klaipeda Port throughout the period of January – February of 2012.
Throughout the foregoing period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port decreased by 23 vessels or by 2,2 percent than throughout the corresponding period of 2011.
The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 36 045, i.e. more by 0,2percent or by 56 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.
