During January-September 2006 17,53 million tons of cargo were handled in Klaipeda port. It is by +10,6 percent more than during the same period 2005.
Valuating by the types of cargo, there was an increase among all types of cargo during January-September 2006 in Klaipeda port. 6372,1 thousand tons of liquid cargo (by +21,6 percent more than in 2005), 5498,2 thousand tons (by+2,7 percent more than in 2005) of bulk and dry bulk and 5656,4 thousand tons (by+7,6 percent more than in 2005) of general cargo were handled in Klaipėda port. .

The increase of liquid cargo was predetermined by the growth of oil product handling (During the first nine months of 2005 4,28 million tons were handled and during January-September of 2006 5,39 million tons were handled). Handling of molasses increased by 3,8 times (21,7 thousand tons were handled during January-September of 2005 and 82,6 thousand tons – during January-September of 2006). Handling of peat also grew in comparison with the last year (1,9 times), bulk fertilizers (+29,7 percent), scrap metal (+4,8 percent), handling of ro-ro type cargo also increased by +29,2 percent (from the point of view of tonnage). Handling of raw sugar decreased by –27,8 percent, timber by –25,5 percent, fertilizers in jumbo bags by –24,9 percent, alloys by 24,0, iron and steel products by –9,8 percent and agricultural products by –8,6 percent in Klaipėda port.
149 423 units of road vehicles (+23,6 percent) and 164 360 TEUs (+ 4,9 percent) were handled in Klaipėda port during January-September 2006.
The growing figure of handling of trailers, auto-trailers and trucks influenced the increase of handling of ro-ro units (+23,6 percent) in Klaipėda port.

The increasing competition among Eastern Baltic ports and appearance of new container market partners (Ventspils port) stopped the growth of container handling.
5 691 vessel called Klaipeda port during January-September 2006 (by –5,1 percent less than during January-September of 2005), 193,3 thousand passengers were served (+6,5 percent).

39,93 million tons of cargo were handled in Saint Petersburg port during the first nine months and 42,74 million tons during the same period of 2005. The biggest growth (+20,5 percent or 1 884,4 thousand tons) was reached by handling containerized cargo; there was a slight growth in handling metals and cold products (+5,8 percent and +5,2 percent respectively) in comparison with last year. The total flow of containerized cargo, metals and oil products made 70,0 percent of the total cargo turnover in Saint Petersburg port.
There was a decrease in handling oil products – 2 222,8 thousand tons, chemicals – 1 717,6 thousand tons, coal – 724,7 thousand tons and timber – 598,2 thousand tons during January-September 2006 and it predetermined the total cargo turnover during first nine months.
During first nine months of this year there were handled 30,67 million tons of cargo in Tallinn port (+4,3 percent more in comparison with the same period of 2005). Speaking about the types of cargo, the turnover of bulk and dry bulk cargo increased by +39,6 percent or by 2 481,4 thousand tons, the turnover of general cargo increased by +12,8 percent or by 410,5 thousand tons and the handling of liquid cargo decreased by – 8,2 percent or by 1 629,6 thousand tons. The biggest part in the total cargo handling structure in Tallinn port made liquid cargo – 59,7 percent.
The increase of total turnover of cargo was predetermined by the growth of coal handling (+2,77 million tons). There was a slight growth of ro-ro and containerized cargo. There was handled 2,49 million tons and 1,0 million tons respectively.
The main type of cargo in Tallinn port is transit cargo – crude oil and oil products – and 18,25 million tons of it there was handled during January-September 2006 (–8,0 proc.), handling of fertilizers decreased to 1,57 million tons (–17,7 percent).
There is observed the growth of vessel calls in Tallinn port during January-September 2006 (+7,2 percent) and the decrease of passenger vessel calls (-10,3 percent).
21,98 million tons of cargo was handled in Ventspils port during January-September 2006 and during the same period last year there was handled 22,29 million tons. According to the types of cargo bulk and dry bulk was handled by – 20,0 percent less while in 2005 it made 6,32 million tons, 3,4 times more they handled general cargo – 1,88 million tons, liquid cargo – by -0,4 percent less – 13,79 million tons. There has grown the handling of ro-ro units (+1 197 thousand tons), crude oil (+907 thousand tons), raw sugar (+107 thousand tons) and ammonia (+101 thousand tons). There decreased the handling of the main transit cargo – oil products and bulk fertilizers by 1 045 thousand tons and 1 288 thousand tons respectively.
During the first nine months of this year there was handled 104 thousand tons of containerized cargo (last year 6 thousand tons) and there were transported 42,7 thousand passengers (1,8 times more than in 2005).
During the first nine months of 2006 19,49 million tons of cargo was handled in Riga port and it is by +6,6 percent more than last year. Bulk and dry bulk made the bigger part of cargo turnover, more than 12,04 million tons, or by + 11 percent more or by 1 189,7 thousand tons more tha during January-September last year. 102,0 thousand tons of bulk fertilizers were handled in the port or by –9,7 percent less than last year. Handling of coal increased by +7,2 percent or 569,2 thousand tons and it made 43,7 percent of the total cargo turnover.
3,77 million tons of general cargo was handled in Riga port (by –21,8 percent less than during January-September last year). According to the types of general cargo timber made 2 256,0 thousand tons (–25,1 percent), and containerized cargo made 1 198,1 thousand tons (+2,8 percent). The volumes of liquid cargo increased by +41,1 percent during January-September 2006 comparing with the same period last year and made 3,67 million tons including 3,62 million tons of oil products (+46,2 percent).
During nine months of this year 198,7 passengers were served in Riga port (+8,1 percent), including 76,9 thousand passengers who arrived in cruise vessels.
During the first nine months of this year 11,70 million tons of cargo was handled in Kaliningrad port (increase of +6,4 percent comparing with the same period last year). There grew the volumes of liquid cargo the majority of which made oil products +946,7 thousand tons or by +14,5 percent more. There decreased the handling of bulk and dry bulk cargo –114,3 thousand tons or by –7,8 percent less. The decrease of general cargo was predetermined by the decrease of metal and timber handling (during January-September 2006 there was handled 2 388,0 thousand tons and during the same period last year – 2 619,9 thousand tons). Increase of handling of liquid cargo influenced the total growth of cargo handling volumes in Klainingrad port.
During the first nine months of 2006 there increased container handling both from the point of view of tonnage and TEU. Handling of ro-ro type cargo increased by +44,4 percent in Kaliningrad port but in the total turnover of the types of cargo it made less than 1 percent.
During January-September 2006 3,01 million tons of cargo was handled in Liepoja port and it is by –10,1 percent less than during the same period last year. 749,3 thousand tons of liquid cargo was handled in the port or by +54,1 percent more than during the same period last year, 1 164,7 thousand tons of bulk and dry bulk (+18,7 percent). The growth of this type of cargo was predetermined by the increase of handling of agricultural products, scrap metals and oil products.
There decreased the handling of general cargo from 1 884,0 thousand tons in 2005 to 0 097,3 thousand tons in 2006 ( –41,8 percent); it was determined by the decrease of total cargo handling volume in Liepoja port. According to the types of cargo there were less ro-ro units (–468,3 thousand tons ), timber (–177,4 thousand tons) and black metals (–88,7 thousand tons).
