Cargo handling in Klaipėda port grows further on

During January-August 2007, 18,15 million tons was handled in Klaipėda port. It is by 16,4 percent more than during the same period last year.
The biggest growth during January-August 2007 was observed in handling bulk fertilizers (+48,1 percent),containers (+44,2 percent) and liquid fertilizers (+42,3 percent) in comparison with the same period 2006.
In August 2007 cargo handling increased by almost one third (2,45 million tons of cargo was handled), comparing to August 2006.

During January-August 2007 there increased the handling volumes of all types of cargo (general, bulk and dry bulk, liquid cargo).
The growth of the volumes of liquid cargo was predetermined by the growth of liquid fertilizer handling (during January-August 2006 0,72 million tons was handled and during January-August 2007 – 1,03 million tons, +42,3 percent). Handling of oil products reached 5,21 million tons ( +5,9 percent).
Handling of bulk fertilizers and peat grew up by 48,1 percent and 27,4 percent respectively. More than 3,38 million tons of fertilizers was handled (it is the second result after oil products handling). During January-August 2007 the biggest monthly volume of bulk fertilizers was handled (526 thousand tons). During the last months there is observed the growth of handling volumes of other bulk cargo (agricultural products, scrap metal, minerals).
Container handling increased by 44 percent and ro-ro units – by 12 percent. The increase of ro-ro units was predetermined by the growth of auto-trailers, trailers, automobiles, and trucks handling in Klaipėda port.
During the first eight months of this year the total number of passengers who came by ferries increased by 26,5 percent and made 210,9 thousand. During the last summer month more than 49 thousand passengers visited the port (it is the biggest figure during 2007).
During May-August 59 cruise vessels called Klaipėda port; 32 thousand passengers came to the port (by 57 percent more in comparison with 2006).
3,4 million tons of crude oil was handled in Butinge terminal during January-August 2007 (total cargo handling volume decreased by 11 percent in comparison with 2006).
