On 25 January 2006, 16:45 h, (Wednesday) in the port of Klaipėda nearby the quay No. 98 in the course of filling the m/v “Karma” with heavy fuel from the tanker “Neris”, a spill of oil occurred as a result of overfilling the motor vessel fuel system.
The offices of the Klaipėda State Seaport promptly notified all the institutions and authorities associated with the said accident.
At 17:20 h the oil cleanup experts installed an oil boom between the quay and the tanker “Neris”. The tanker was given instructions not to move in order to contain the oil-polluted ice that built up between the tanker and the m/v “Karma”.
Due to meteorological conditions, the frozen water crystallized, thus a decision was taken to scoop the whole frozen water mass with pollutants on surface into a container by means of a grab crane.
On 26 January 2006, 05:30 h, (Thursday) in the offshore area of the port of Klaipėda in front of the quay No. 89, while carrying out dredging works, an explosive device was dug out from the fairway and detected on the deck of the dredger „Severnaya“. Special services were called in to the scene of the accident and the parties associated with this accident were informed.
At 09:00 h combat engineers removed the explosive from the territory of the port of Klaipėda.
