Klaipeda Port Authority Commences Construction on New Fleet Base

The construction of a fleet base for the Port Authority’s fleet activities has started in the southern part of the Klaipėda Port, in Marių Street. The start of the work was marked by the burial and dedication of a capsule containing a letter to future generations.

The old building, constructed over sixty years ago and designated for the fleet base, is in a state of disrepair and unsuitable for such activities, and the lack of storage space has necessitated storing some equipment outside. The new fleet base will be located in a different place, next to the small fishing boat pier.

“The new building will be adapted to the Port Authority’s fleet activities will include storage rooms and small workshops. It will provide modern working conditions for the Port Authority’s divers and ship crews. The project will also include the installation of electricity grids to provide electricity to the ships in the future. Not only will it be a modern building, but the site will also be landscaped and the project will meet the criteria of sustainability and green orientation. Although the start of the project was delayed and complicated by the remains of the ‘Regata’ restaurant, which were discovered on the site several years ago, we have no doubt that the project will be successfully implemented” says Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The facilities will be designed to accommodate special equipment for port maintenance, pollutant collection, hydrographs, etc. The repair workshops will also be used for maintenance and partial repairs of equipment.

The new fleet base will be able to receive waste water from ships and supply water to ships.

The project will include work to install an electric charging station. As previously announced, a waste collection vessel is being built for the Port Authority, which will be powered not only by electricity but also by hydrogen. The company will also purchase hybrid pilot boats.

The fleet base is being built by “UAB Infes”, which won the tender and is a new partner in the Port Authority’s infrastructure projects.

The value of the project works is EUR 5.36 million. The project is scheduled for implementation next spring.
