Klaipėda is a Future Offshore Wind Hub

Klaipėda Port Authority starts constructing the infrastructure for the offshore wind energy projects – the contract was signed for the reconstruction of quays on Smeltė peninsula, which will ensure smooth assembly, handling and transportation of wind turbines. The successful tenderer UAB Tilsta has been tasked with reconstructing the quays at the former International Ferry Port. The company is expected to complete all the operations entrusted to it by the end of 2026. The contract value amounts to EUR 36.6 million, excluding VAT. Further away from the quays, the depth of 12 metres has already been reached.

40 t/m2 quay load

Up to 40 t/m2 quay load in parts of the quay for heavy lifting and in the rest of the area.

Territory – 21 ha

21 hectares of territory for storage and pre-assembly of the wind turbines with convenient access by road and rail.

Depth of 12 m

Future quay depth will be 12 m.

In May 2022, an investment agreement was signed between Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and Klaipėda Stevedoring Company KLASCO to develop the port infrastructure required for the planned development of offshore wind farms.

The quays of Smeltė peninsula (No 149, No 150, and No 151 part) will be reconstructed and adapted for the handling, assembly and storage of elements of wind turbines. The planned area for the installation infrastructure is 21 ha. The length of the newly reconstructed quays is approximately 346 m. The depth of the reconstructed quay will be 12 m.

The screening procedures for the environmental impact assessment of the potential project were finalised: the Environmental Protection Agency has decided that these operations do not need the environmental impact assessment.

The development of the offshore wind energy in Klaipėda Port is expected to open up new economic and professional opportunities: from the creation of specialised service centres, which will generate highly skilled jobs, to additional orders for shipbuilding and repair companies. This sector is also likely to have a positive impact on the service and accommodation industries, and provide an opportunity for academia to adapt its curricula to include new specialisations related to the offshore wind energy.
