VIKING celebrates its 10 year anniversary

On the 28th of February, 2013 SC „Lithuanian Railways“ organized the international conference „The 10 year activity experience of cargo transportation by shuttle train VIKING and new challenges„ at the hotel „Crowne Plaza“ (Vilnius).

This event was organized in order to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of this project. Director General Arvydas Vaitkus and Marketing and Administration Director Arturas Drungilas participated at this event. The key objective of this international conference was to evaluate the further development perspectives of the project that was launched 10 years ago and to increase cargo flows among countries of the Baltic and Black Sea coasts.

The project VIKING launched on the 6th of February 2003 and performing the cargo freight between Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukraine increased its turnover from 17 TEU to 60 000 TEU. Today this project embraces railway administrations of 4 countries (lately Bulgaria joined the project) and 5 container train operators. Transport and logistics companies and railway authorities from Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Sweden and Finland demonstrate their interest in the development of this train and possible partnership.
