REVIEW OF CARGO HANDLING IN KLAIPĖDA AND OTHER EASTERN COAST BALTIC
SEA PORTS
January – April of 2012
The aggregated throughput of sea – born cargo in Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – April of 2012 totalled 13,9 million tons, the overall year – on – year change was 5,0 percent down. 11,2 million tons were handled in Klaipeda Seaport throughout the analysed period, the year-on-year change was -7,0 pct. or -838,2 thou. tn, meanwhile Būtingės terminal handled 2,7 million tn, the year-on-year change was +4,1 pct. or +105,9 thou. tn. The negative change of Klaipęda Seaport cargo handling results is approx. 830 thou. tn, i.e., equals to the decreased handling turnover of bulk fertilizers.
The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout January – April of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 was reached due to increased handling volumes of iron ore (+160,4 thou. tn yoy), crude oil (+105,9 thou. tn yoy), raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+104,0 thou. tn yoy) and oil products (+101,0 thou. tn yoy).
The biggest drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – April of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemicalfertilizers (-829,8 thou. tn yoy) and raw sugar (-145,5 thou. tn yoy).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargoincreased by +3,9 pct. to 6 424,9 thou. tn (46,2 pct. of overall Port handling turnover). General cargo handlingvolumes decreased by 5,8pct. yoy, the overall turnover in this cargo group was 3 567,9thou. tn (25,7pct. of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 16,1 pct., the handling rates of this cargo category were 3 901,8 thou. tn (28,1 pct. of overall Port handling turnover).
2 209vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal throughout the period ofJanuary – April of 2012. 27 vessels (+3,8 pct. or 1 vessel yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. 1 599 international vessels (+6 vessels or +0,4 pct year-on-year) and 583 domestic ships ( -32 ships or -5,2 pct. yoy) were reported to call Klaipėda Port. Throughout the foregoing period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port was less by 26 vessels or by 1,2 pct. than throughout the corresponding period of 2011. The number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 81 316, i.e. more by 4,8pct. or by 3 725 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.
