Due to preliminary preventive works hurricane “Ervin” did not make any hard damage to Klaipeda Seaport – only some fenders were torn off. These losses to port facility will be covered by insurance companies.
In January 7, 2005 (Friday), following hydro meteorological data, all ship agents and port operators were informed about the coming hurricane and forecasted complicated weather conditions.
When weather forecast proved to be correct, on the 8 of January 2005, when wind velocity reached up to 27-33 m/s, navigation in Klaipeda Seaport was stopped.
Inner navigation in the seaport started on Sunday, on the 9 of January, – in the second half of the day; when wind velocity reduced up to 25 m/s, ferry “ Neringa” started operating. To keep vessels safe, some of them were re – moored. Approximately at 8 p.m. Ro-Ro ferry “Svealand” left the port and at night, when the wind went down up to 12-16 m/s, other ferries were given the permission to call the port.
Today due to the forecasted 15-20m/s velocity wind, only big tankers will not be allowed to call the port. The port will operate steadily.
Bathymetric survey will be executed and possible port entrance channel sedimentations will be determined, insurance companies will compensate the excavation of which, as soon as the meteo conditions improve.
Port companies are calculating the loss made by hurricane.
