In March, 2005 2.02 million tons of cargo were handled in the port of Klaipėda. In comparison with the previous year March cargo handling increased by 4 %.
 
Good cargo handling results in March, 2005 decreased cargo handling differences of this and last year first quarters up to 3 %.
 
In March, 2005 the flows of oil products increased both from Mažeikiai oil factory and Russia.
 
During January – March, 2005 5.69 million tons of cargo were handled in Klaipėda port, 4.35 million tons loaded and 1.34 million tons unloaded.
In the 1rst quarter of 2005 Klaipėda port accepted 2452 vessels and 26 852 passengers.
 
3.89 million tons of cargo (except oil products) were handled in January – March, 2005, i.e. by 7 % more than last year.
 
                      During January – March handling of general cargo increased by 12 %, handling of dry bulk cargo remained almost the same as in the same period last year, handling of liquid cargo decreased.
 
Grain handling tens of times exceeded the results of the 1rst quarter of the last year. This year it made 173 thousand tons (10.5 thousand tons in January – March, 2004), handling of iron and steel products, fodder, perishable products, scrap iron, peat and timber considerably increased.
 
Container throughput increased as well. 51 019 TEU containers were handled in January – March, 2005, i.e. by 51 % more in comparison with the same period last year.
 
Būtingė SPM handled 1.01 million tons of unrefined oil in January – March, 2005.

Neighbouring ports
 
During January – March, 2005 the port of St. Petersburg handled 11.28 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 19 % more than last year.
The port of Primorsk handled 13.96 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 49 % more than in the same period last year.
 
In January – March, 2005 the port of Tallinn handled 9.62 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 1.0 % less than in the same period last year.
During January – March, 2005 liquid cargo increased by 1 %, however general cargo decreased by 45 %. Container throughput (TEU) increased by 2.7 %, however in respect of weight it decreased by 1.3 %, ro-ro cargo increased by 10.2 % in comparison with the same period last year.
 
The port of Riga handled 5.72 million tons of cargo, i.e. by 2.8 % in comparison with January – March, 2004.
Handling of bulk and liquid cargo increased respectively by 11.2 % and 3.7 %, however the handling of general cargo decreased by 11.9 %, handling of coal increased by 12.5 % comparing with January – March last year.
During January – March handling of oil products increased by 0.4 %, building materials – by 100 %, metals – by 32.1 %, fertilizers – by 17.7 %, road vehicles – by 16.9 %. Handling of containers (TEU) decreased by 41.6 %, frozen products – by 100 %, machine equipment – by 100 %, timber – by 10.8 %.
