Increase in general and bulk cargo handling in Klaipeda port

                      In January-July 2005 12.21 million tons of cargos were handled in the port of Klaipeda, i.e. by 2 % more in comparison with respective period of the last year.

 

                      During January-July handling of general cargo increased by 11 %, bulk cargo – by 8 %, handling of liquid cargo, however, decreased.

 

                      During seven months this year 123 608 TEU, i.e. by 33 % more was handled in the port of Klaipeda in comparison with the last year. The factors that directly made influence on container handling in the port are as follows: cargo containerization, growing potential of Lithuanian consumers, Klaipeda port potential to render services to some markets at once (Russia, Byelorussia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc.).

 

                      During January-June 2005 further growth in the handling of fertilizers (liquid, bulk and packed), was observed, 2.24 million tons were handled, i.e. by 20 % more than last year.

 

                      Handling of iron and steel products almost doubled (287.8 thousand tons in 2005 and 161.5 thousand tons in 2004), handling of grain increased fourfold (279.5 thousand tons this year and 63.5 thousand tons last year).

 

                      Handling of perishable products increased further, namely, 262.9 thousand tons were handled during January-June 2005, i.e. almost twice as in previous year.

 

                      Services were provided to 122.1 thousand passengers in the port of Klaipeda in January-June 2005, i.e. by 22 % more than last year.
