In January through June 2006 Klaipeda Port handled 11,76 million tones of cargo, which is higher by +10,5 percent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2005. The trend of increasing of general changes is evident in relation to the same periods last year (January – April 2006 change +1,5 percent; January – May change + 4,0 percent, January – June 2006 change +10,5 percent). Such high total growth is the result of the June handling figures that grew up by 1,5 time. This growth rate justifies the optimistic forecasts for the turnover in the Port.
The highest growth rates recorded in six months of this year are in handling of agricultural products (+33,2 percent, bulk fertilizers (+28,7 percent) and oil products (+23,8 percent) in relation to the same period last year.

In terms of cargo types, there was a growth of all cargo types including liquid, dry and bulk and general cargoes in the port of Klaipeda in January-June this year.
Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in the first six months of 2005 amount of oil handled stood at 3,16 million tons while in January-June 2006 – 3,91 million tons) and several fold growth of molasses handling. UAB “Krovinių terminalas”, which started its operation in this March, handled over 700 thousand tons of oil.
Increased cargo flows of bulk fertilizers and agricultural products had a major impact on growth of bulk and dry cargo handling. In January-June this year Klaipeda port handled 1,57 million tons (figure for 2005 was 1,22 million tons) of bulk fertilizers, an increase of +28,7 percent, and 0,53 million tons (figure for 2005 was 0,40 million tons) of agricultural products, an increase of + 33,2 percent.
Increase of Ro-ro units (change + 21,5 percent) was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters, trucks and passenger cars in the port of Klaipeda. Over 17,9 thousand ro-ro units were handled in June, which is the highest monthly figure for 2006.
Handling of Ro-ro units (gross) and timber was the highest throughout the six months of this year. Handling of the ro-ro units reached almost 336 thousand tons and the latter – 63,1 thousand tons. The growth of these cargoes directly influenced the increased handling flow of general cargoes.
The container handling (TEU), which increased in June, made it possible to surpass the total handling amount for the six months in relation to the last year.
On 11 June 2006, the cruise ship “Constellation” called at Klaipeda port bringing 2015 passengers from the US, United Kingdom and Canada. Number of passengers visiting the Port in the first half of 2006 was 93 258 (change of +3,5 percent).
Trend to service larger tonnage ships is noted in the port of Klaipeda. Notwithstanding the -5 percent decrease in total number of ship calls, turnover of cargo increased by +10 percent.
