The higher growth rate was checked by the fire at AB “Mažeikių nafta“on 12 October, as a result of which oil product handling amounts decreased. The company’s export quantities through the port of Klaipeda went down, as the light oil products processed by the company in Mažeikiai are mostly supplied to the markets of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in the first ten months of 2005 amount of oil handled stood at 4.78 million tons while in January-October 2006 – 5.82 million tons, change +21,8 percent).
Increased cargo flows of bulk fertilizers, scrap metal and peat had a major impact on growth of bulk and dry cargo handling. In January-October this year Klaipeda port handled 3.02 million tons (figure for 2005 was 2.32 million tons) of bulk fertilizers, an increase of +29.9 percent, and 0.57 million tons (figure for 2005 was 0.53 million tons) of metal scrap, an increase of + 7.9 percent.
The container handling (TEU), which increased in the three last months, made it possible to surpass the total handling amount for the ten months in relation to the previous year. In October this year 21.1 thousand TEU was handled, which is the highest monthly rate in 2006.
Increase of Ro-ro units (change + 23.4 percent) was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters and trucks in the port of Klaipeda
In October 2006, turnover of ro-ro units (gross) and metal handling was the highest in the tenth months of this year. Turnover of ro-ro units was 380 thousand tones, while that of the latter 71,7 thousand tones. Growth of the mentioned cargoes directly influenced the increase of general cargo handling flow.
On 7 October the visit of the cruise ship Boudicca closed the cruise shipping season in the port of Klaipeda. Notwithstanding the decreased number of calls of cruise ships in 2006 (change -18.6 percent in comparison to 2005), however, the numbers of foreign visitors coming on cruise ships increased (change +3.8 percent).
The total number of passengers visiting the port during the first ten months grew by 11.1 percent and amounted to 212 thousand.
