In January 2007 Klaipeda Port handled 2.13 million tones of cargo, which is higher by +3.2 percent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2006.
The highest growth rates in January this year recorded in the area of container handling (+28.4 percent), bulk fertilizers (+22.5 percent) and oil products (+21.5 percent) in relation to the same period of 2006.
In January 2007, turnover of general cargo and liquid cargo saw the highest growth rates, while bulk cargo handling turnover slumped by a quarter.
Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in January 2006 amount of oil handled totaled 0.56 tons, while in January 2007 – 0.68 million tons, change of +21.5 percent).
Increase of container handling increased by +28.4 percent, and Ro-ro units + 16 percent. Increase in the turnover of Ro-ro units was generated by growth of handling of trailers, trucks and passenger cars in the port of Klaipeda.
The total number of passengers visiting the port during January grew by 17.6 percent and amounted to 12.3 thousand.
The trend to service larger tonnage vessels in the port of Klaipeda has been noted. Notwithstanding the lower number of calls in January which constituted decrease -24.3 percent, the amount of cargo handled increased by +3.2 percent.
Būtingė Oil Terminal handled 0.3 million tons of crude oil in January 2007 (in 2006 handling operations at the terminal were not executed). It is necessary to note that all the ships (three) that called at the terminal during this months brought imported crude oil (raw product for the company “Mažeikių nafta”).
