Cargo Handling at the Port of Klaipeda and Adjacent Ports in January 2007

In January 2007 Klaipeda Port handled 2.13 million tons of cargo, which is higher by +3.2 percent in comparison to the corresponding period of 2006. 
In terms of cargo types, the largest growth was recorded for general and liquid cargoes, while the turnover of bulk cargoes slumped by a quarter.

Growth of liquid cargoes resulted from increasing oil products handling (in January of 2006 amount of oil handled stood at 0.56 million tons, while in January 2007 – 0.68 million tons, change +21.5 percent).  In comparison to the previous year, turnover of scrap metal (2.7 times), bagged fertilizers (1.8 times), refrigerated cargoes (+60.1 percent), bulk fertilizers (+22.5 percent) saw an increase in volume; there was also an increase of +28.5 percent in turnover of ro-ro units (in terms of tonnage) and container handling (in terms of tonnage).  Handling figures for agricultural products -87.3 percent, ferroalloys -40.8 percent, peat -40.0 percent and timber –31.9 percent slumped in Klaipeda seaport.
Increase of Ro-ro units was generated by growth of handling of trailers, highway freighters, passenger cars and trucks in the port of Klaipeda.
Throughout January the total number of passengers visiting the port grew by 17.6 percent and constituted 12.3 thousand.
The trend of increasing of service of larger tonnage vessels continues in the port of Klaipeda.  Notwithstanding the decreasing calls of ships in this January which went down by 24.3 percent, the turnover of cargo handled increased by +3.2 percent.

In terms of cargo turnover, the port of Klaipeda climbed upwards and ranked as the fifth amongst the ports in the East Baltic market surpassing the port of Riga.

At the port of Saint Petersburg the amount of cargo handled in January of this year totalled 3.67 million tons. The highest growth was recorded for coal handling (+ 53.4 percent or 73 thousand tons), oil products (+ 52.8 percent or 34 thousand tons) and containerised cargo handling (+ 32.4 percent or 297 thousand tons); handling of grain, raw petroleum and refrigerated goods grew in relation to the previous year.  Total flow of containerized cargo, metals and oil products accounted for 61.2 percent of the turnover of the port of Saint Petersburg.
In January 2007, handling of fertilisers -96 thousand tons and ferrous metals -23 thousand tons went down.
 
Throughout January of 2007, the port of Tallinn handled 3.91 million tons of cargo (+6.6 percent change in comparison to the same period of 2006). In terms of cargo type, dry bulk cargo handling grew by +57.6 percent or 444 thousand tons, general cargo +13.4 percent or 46 thousand tons, while amount of liquid cargo handled decreased by –9.6 percent or 247 thousand tons.  Liquid cargoes accounted for the largest share, namely 59.1 percent, in the total handling structure in Tallinn port.
In January of this year, 272 freight ships called at the port of Tallinn, while this number for the corresponding period of 2006 was 255 calls (change +6.7 percent).
 
Cargo handling figure for the port of Ventspils in January 2007 totalled 2.21 million tons, the figure for the corresponding period of 2006 was 2.5 million tons.  In terms of cargo type, amount of liquid cargoes handled was –16.4 percent, respectively 1.34 million tons, dry bulk cargo handled decreased by -7.3 percent, respectively 0.68 million tons, general cargo turnover increased by +17.6 percent reaching respectively amount of 0.18 million tons.  In terms of cargo nomenclature, handling of raw oil (+175 thousand tons) and coal (+35 thousand tons) increased.  Handling of raw oil was not carried out in January 2006.  Decrease was recorded for handling of the principal transit cargoes, namely, oil products and bulk fertilisers, respectively 417 thousand tons and 22 thousand tons.
Throughout January of this year the port of Ventspils handled 10 thousand tons of containerised cargoes (3 thousand tons last year); passenger transportation figure was 2.3 thousand (1.5 fold increase in relation to in 2006).
 
Throughout January of 2006 the port of Riga handled 1.84 million tons of cargo, which is less by -10.7 percent in relation to the same period of the previous year. Decrease was recorded for all types of cargo. Handling of dry bulk cargo accounted for the larger share of the total turnover amounting to more than 1.09 million tons, this amount decreased by -11.0 percent or 135 thousand tons in comparison with last January. Amount of bulk fertilizers handled was +78 thousand tons or +76.7 percent more than the previous year.  Coal handling decreased by -23.6 percent down to 690 thousand tons and accounted for 37.6 percent of total handling turnover.
Amount of general cargo handled in the port of Riga was 353 thousand tons (-13.2 percent down in comparison to January of the previous year).  In terms of general cargo nomenclature, timber accounted for 173 thousand tons (-29.7 percent), and containerised cargoes 123 thousand tons (-10.7 percent). Turnover of liquid cargo in January 2007 slumped by -7.6 percent in comparison to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 393 thousand tons.
During the first month of this year 12.37 thousand passengers visited the port of Riga, while in January 2006 this figure was mere 1.1 thousand (11 fold increase).
 
Amount of cargo handled in the port of Liepaja in January 2007 totalled 0.33 million tons, which represents an increase of +25.4 percent in relation to January of 2006. Handling of liquid cargo amounted to 60 thousand tons or +11.6 percent more than in the same period last year, handling of bulk and dry cargo amounted to 156 thousand tons (growth of +27.6 percent).  Growth of these types of cargo is the result of increased handling of agricultural goods, building materials and oil products.
Figure for general cargoes was up from 89 thousand tons in 2006 to 117 thousand tons in 2007 (change +30.8 percent).  In terms of cargo nomenclature, increase was recorded for handling of ferrous metals (+39 thousand tons) and refrigerated goods.
