Cargo handling in Klaipėda and neighbouring ports during January-April 2007

During January-April 2007 8,57 mln. t of cargo was handled in Klaipėda Port. It is by 12,2 percent more than during the same period 2006.
                      During January-April 2007 there mostly increased handling volumes of general and liquid cargo and the volumes of bulk cargo decreased by 3 percent.

                      Cargo handling in April 2007 increased by 8,4 percent (2,19 mln. t was handled), comparing to 2006.
The growth of liquid cargo was predetermined by the growth in oil products handling (during January-April 2006 2,4 mln. T was handled and during January-April 2007– 2,6 mln. t, change +9,6 percent). Handling volumes of liquid fertilizers increased by 29 percent, but it made only a small part (from the point of view of tonnage) of the total handling volume of liquid cargo. Comparing to last year there increased handling volumes of packed fertilizers (1,5 times), bulk fertilizers(47,3 percent), cold cargo (46,1 percent), peat (22,3 percent), oil products (9,6 percent), as well as ro-ro units increased by 23,2 percent (from the point of view of tonnage) and container handling by 44,3 percent (from the point of view of tonnage). There was a decrease in handling raw sugar –75,1 percent, agricultural products  –67,5 percent, molasses  – 4,5 percent, alloys –35,5 percent and  minerals –29,3 percent in Klaipėda Port.
Container handling increased by 33,5 percent, and  ro-ro units by 19,1 percent. The increase in handling ro-ro units was predetermined by the growth in handling auto-trailers, trailers, automobiles and trucks in Klaipėda Port.
                      During the first four months of this year the total number of passengers served in the port increased by 20,7 percent and made 54,2 thousand. In May the first cruise vessel passengers will call Klaipėda and it will increase the total figure of passengers served in the port.

According to cargo handling the port of Klaipeda remains in the 5th place among the easter Baltic ports market, in this way overtaking the port of Riga.

During January-April 2007 15,37 million tons of cargo was handled in Talino port (+11,2 percent in comparison with the same period of  2006). According to the type of cargo there increased handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo by 29,7 percent or by 1066 thous. t, general cargo by 8,5 percent or by  128 thous. t and liquid cargo by 4,1 percent or by 357 thous. t. Liquid cargo made the biggest part of cargo in the total structure of cargo in Tallinn port, i.e. 59,1 percent.
During January-April 2007 1066 cargo ships called Tallinn port and during the same period of 2006  – 1043 ships  (change  +2,2 percent).
 
During January-April 2007 10,41 million tons of cargo was handled in Ventspils port, and during the same period of 2006 – 9,57 mln. t. There grew the handling volumes of all types of cargo: liquid cargo handling increased by 7,9 percent, or by  6,52 mln. t, bulk and dry bulk by 11,7 percent or by 3,04 mln. t, general cargo by 5,9 percent or by  0,86 mln. t. According to the types of cargo there increased crude oil (+732 thous. t), grains (+67 thous. t) and raw sugar (+38 thous. t) handling in Ventspils port. During January-April 2006 only 17 thous.t of crude oil was handled in Ventspils port. Handling volumes of the main transit cargo – oil products and bulk fertilizers – were the following: handling of oil products in 2007 – 5,42 mln. t (-2,9 percent), bulk fertilizers – 1,25 mln. t (+40,6 percent).
During January-April 2007 52 thousand t of containerized cargo was handled in Ventspils port (last year –  35 thous. t) and  10,4 thous. Passengers served (by 1,4 times more than in 2006).
 
During January-April 2007 7,96 million t of cargo was handled in Riga port, i.e. by 5,1 percent less than last year.  There decreased the handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo.  The biggest part of cargo, more than 4,59 mln. t, made bulk and dry bulk cargo, or by  –11,2 percent or by 578 thous. t less than during January-April 2006.Handling volumes of bulk fertilizers made 129 thous. t or by 27,9 percent more than last year. Handling of coal decreased by 17,7 percent to  3,14 mln. t and made  39,4 percent of the total cargo turnover.
1,75 million tons of general cargo was handled in Riga port ( by 7,4 percent more than during January-April 2006). According to the type of general cargo 965 thous  t made timber (-1,1 percent), and 671 thous. t (+15,3 percent) – containerized cargo. The volumes of liquid cargo increased by 1,6 percent during January-April 2007in comparison with the same period last year and made 1,63 mln. t.
During the first four months 60,2 thousand passengers were serve din Riga port and during the same period of 2006 – 21,7 thousand (growth – 2,8 times).
 
During January-April 2007 0,62 million tons was handled in  Liepaja port, it is by 2,5 percent less than during the same period last year. 109 thous.t of liquid cargo was handled or by 14,9 percent less than during the same period last year, bulk and dry bulk handling made  299 thous. t (growth of 12,5 percent). The growth of those types of cargo was predetermined by the growth of agricultural products handling and building materials handling.  
Decrease of general cargo handling from 243 thous. t in  2006 to 213 thous. t in 2007 (change–12,3 percent). According to the types of cargo, timber handling decreased too (-43 thous. t).
