Incident in port external road-stead

 

In March 6 2008 at 11⁵⁰ a.m. a dispatcher on duty of SE Klaipėda State Seaport Authority got a notice from the Captain of the vessel „Vestlandia“ 61,68 m of length , built in 1983 (flying a flag of the Republic of Dominika) that the main engine of a vessel went wrong, the anchors broke and the vessel was drifting towards Klaipėda port (gusts of wind reached 27,7 m/s, wave height – up to 5 m). Vessel „Vestlandia“ (the owner is Estonian company „Norfos Shipping“) was carrying cold fish to Klaipėda port and planned to moor at AB „Vakarų laivų gamykla“ operated quays.

 

Having received the notice VTS of SE Klaipėda State Seaport Authority immediately informed ship agent in Klaipėda UAB „V. Paulius & Associates“ and the agent ordered a tug-boat „Stumbras“ to the place of incident in order not to allow the vessel „Vestlandia“ to approach to a dangerous distance to the shore. The above-mentioned tug-boat worked together with the tog-boat „Smit Sulawesi“ serving Būtingės terminal as well.

 

According to the latest data, „Vestlandia“crew managed to start the engines and the vessel could sail to a safer place at Klaipėda port approaches. Tug-boat „Smit Sulawesi“ is on duty at the vessel.

 

According to the information given by Lithuanian hydro-meteorological service Klaipėda department, the wind should calm down by the night. While the vessel is at a safe distance from the shore, the crew is going to examine the engines and inform respective services. Then the decisions will be taken concerning the following steps.  

 

After liquidation of breakdowns it is anticipated that the vessel will be able to call Klaipėda port and discharge the cargo.
