On 29 October 2008 (Wednesday) at 10 50 a.m., a metal pile was heaved from the depth of 9-10 metres.
On 27 October 2008 (Monday) at about 12.55 p.m., the Port Dispatcher service received a message from the Port Authority diving boat “Rifas” that an object reminding of an explosive device had been found at the depth of 9-10 metres alongside quay No. 143A while performing underwater operations, its visible part being approx. 5.5 m long and approx. 0.6 m. wide.
Having received the above message the Dispatcher’s office of Klaipeda State Seaport Authority informed immediately the officers of the Management Centre of Emergency Situations and relevant authorities of the city. Vessel traffic was limited in the vicinity of the whereabouts of the found object, and assistance of the naval divers and specialists of the Sapper Unit of J.Vitkus Engineer Combat Battalion was requested.
Operations to lift the object started at 9.50 a.m. of 29 October 2008 (Wednesday) and were completed in an hour. After the object was pulled out it was identified as a metal pile.
