A monument „Albatrosas“ will be constructed to honour the gone Lithuanian seafarers and sunk ships

Dec 04 2008

The Decree No 1234 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania comes into force on the 5th of December 2008 concerning the construction of the monument to the gone seafarers and sunk ships. Port Authority and port companies plan to implement the idea suggested by Lithuanian marine journalists` club „Marinus“ – to construct a monument to the gone Lithuanian seafarers and sunk ships. The bird of the seas ‚Albatross‘, the symbol of courage and freedom was chosen for the implementation of this idea.

While creating and development of image of Klaipėda as a city with many-year maritime traditions there rose the idea to construct a monument to honour the gone Lithuanian seafarers and sunk ships. The bird of the seas ‚Albatross‘, the symbol of courage and freedom was chosen for the implementation of this idea.  The sculptural composition of metal leaves will be of 10 m of height and it should tower next to Lithuanian maritime museum in Smiltyne. On granite plates there will be engraved the names and surnames of Lithuanian seafarers, fishermen and sails-men who had sailed and never returned to the shore as well as the names of sunk ships. The monument will meet the ships calling the port and will be clearly seen due to the planned impressive illumination. At the monument it is planned to form areas for mass events.

The implementation steps of the project
One of the first phases of the implementation of this idea – was the formation of the working group by the Order No 3-295 of the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania of the 6th of September 2007 for the organization of the implementation work to honour the gone Lithuanian seafarers and sunk ships project. The group is headed by the Acting Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius.

On the 11th of April 2008 Klaipeda State Seaport Authority signed a contract with a sculptor Klaudijus Pūdymas and architect Mindaugas Zabarauskas who created a concept, a model and Technical Project of how to honour the gone Lithuanian seafarers and sunk ships. The approvals for the Technical project are being collected at the moment.

The Decree No 1234 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania which will come into force on the 5th of December 2008, which approves the construction of this monument, will allow the sculptor K.Pūdymas and architect M. Zabarauskas to complete the approvals of the Technical Project and get permission for the construction of the monument.

When the Technical Project is approved and cost estimate is prepared, the meeting of the working group will be organized to solve the financing matters.

It is planned to complete the construction of the monument and open it in the beginning of 2009.
