The Lithuanian part of the project belonging to East–West transport corridor, comprising the infrastructure complex of Klaipeda State Sea Port, roads and railways was acknowledged as State importance economic project. The Government of the Republic of Lithuania approved such a resolution on 28-10-2009 following the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
„On ensuring a qualitative transport infrastructure towards the direction East–West, Lithuania will be able to open new roads to cargo transportation between Asia and Europe via Klaipeda Seaport.
It will make a great impact on the growth of economy of the country and its competitiveness in regional and global markets“,-told the Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis.
The acknowledgement of the infrastructure of East – West transport corridor, belonging to Lithuania, as economical project of State importance will allow to update and enhance more rapidly transport service quality of the country. Exceptional project status will facilitate the procedures of land takeover for society needs, provide priority while receiving the EU structural assistance, will create more favourable conditions for attracting of for private capital investments.
East – Wets intermodal transport corridor connects European and Asian transport hubs and nets that had formed many years ago.
„ Transport flows in East – West corridor have been growing noticeably faster than in other transeuropean transport net corridors. Therefore we are to be ready to create proper conditions for the developing European – Asian trade relations – it has become obvious in the first meeting of transport ministers of Europe and Asia organized in Vilnius“, – told Eligijus Masiulis, the Minister of Transport and Communications.
According to the Minister of Transport, Lithuania occupying a small corridor territory, makes a special impact on inter – continental cargo flows, because namely in Lithuania the overland route finishes and the sea route starts. According to the Minister the development of overland transport connections among Europe and Asia has great perspectives, as if to compare with sea transport, this development should allow to shorten significantly cargo transportation time.
„East –West transport corridor is one of the most important intermodal transport development projects in Lithuania. Implementation of this project will directly contribute to efficient enhancement of transport sector of Lithuania and will be of great importance to the economics of Lithuania“, told the Minister E. Masiulis.
A special work group will prepare a program on the implementation of the project of East – West transport corridor. This program will be coordinated with associated structures of Lithuania and foreign partners.
